The phrase, “manifest destiny”, first appeared in an article in the Democratic Review for July-August 1845 by John O’Sullivan. The phrase was first used in Congress in 1846, when the Oregon territory was being discussed. Manifest Destiny refers to the expansion of the United States from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. To be more specific, it was from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.
Mexico lost half of its territory (California, Arizona, Texas, and other U.S. states) due to the manifest destiny cause. The border of Canada and the United States was discussed with Great Britain during this movement. The Great Plains was the last territory to receive new settlers. People traveled many miles to reach their new lands.

As more people moved out west, there needed to be a way to travel greater distances. The railroad was expanded as well.
